Kapsch CarrierCom: Closing of the acquisition of parts of Nortel’s Carrier Networks Division
One of the largest Austrian technology acquisitions to take place during the past years closed on March 31st 2010. With the acquisition of parts of Nortel’s Carrier Networks Division, Kapsch CarrierCom transforms itself from a regional supplier focused on Central and Southeastern Europe, to a global GSM player. With immediate effect, Kapsch CarrierCom becomes the global market leader for GSM-R (Global System for Mobile Communications-Railway). The trust of the clients towards the new company was clearly proven by two further major orders. The French railways and the Algerian railways ANESRIF awarded orders that will be now executed by Kapsch CarrierCom.
GSM-R IG supported UIC ERTMS World Conference 2009
The GSM-R Industry Group participated in the UIC ERTMS World Conference 2009 in Malaga, Spain from 31st March to 2nd April. This Conference is the forum where industry and users are given the opportunity to meet and exchange experiences, to announce achievements of ERTMS projects world wide, to set trends and push decisions.
GSM-R IG played a leading role in this context; it was involved in the conference during the opening ceremony, by introducing the main topics of interest in the international communications of railway. It was present in several press conference and in the closing panel where were answered some questions on migration strategies of the GSM-R system integrated with the signaling system ETCS and on the evolution of the projects.
The GSM-R IG contributed to the conference with four presentations addressing the main challenges and providing progressive proposals to overcome them. GSM-R IG members also were present in the exhibition space with stands that were a meeting point to explore the issues outlined during the conference and to explain to the Railway Undertaking and Infrastructure Managers their products portfolio.
GSM-R IG is participating in “Business on Rail 2008” from 4th to 6th of November 2008 in Sao Paulo – Brazil
The 11th edition of the Business on Rails Show will happen from November 04th to the 06th, 2008 at the Red Pavilion of Expo Center Norte, in São Paulo, Brazil. The show is organized by Railway Magazine (Revista Ferroviária) and is recognized as the biggest and most representative railway event in Latin America. The GSM-R IG is participating as sponsors of the event. The aim of the sponsorship is to promote the GSM-R as a communication railway standard for Latin America. The Railways are experiencing now a revival in South America with investments have been approved for the construction of the first passenger High Speed Line in Brazil from Sao Paulo to Rio de Janeiro.
The sponsorship includes a GSM-R Industry Group Stand, where all members will be showing their systems. In the Congress running in parallel to the Business on Rail Exhibition a representative of the UIC – Union International de Chemin de Fer will make a presentation about the GSM-R in the World.

GSM-R IG signature of the ERTMS MoU in Rome
At a ceremony in Rome on the 4th of July 2008, the GSM-R IG along with the European Commission an other members of railway sectors signed the Second Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to support the speeding up of ERTMS projects. GSM-R Industry speaker Hebe de Campos Silveira, signing the MoU said that the GSM-R IG welcomes the European Commission initiative to join efforts from independent railway operators and from industry suppliers of ETCS and GSM-R technology in establishing the basic principles of an EU deployment strategy to eliminate barriers and guarantee multi-supplier interoperability of the ERTMS technological standard in Europe.
